Watercolor Backgrounds + Embossed Flowers

Card Making Ideas· Card Making Techniques

9 Jun

If you’ve ever wanted to create beautiful watercolor-style cards without actually painting—these Watercolor Background cards are for you! Today I’m sharing five unique cards I made using simple water-based inks, water, and heat embossing powders from Stampin’ Up! You’ll learn how to mix color, layer backgrounds, and add bold embossed floral images in black, white, silver, gold, and copper.

Watercolor BackgroundVideo Tutorial

Below, I’ve included a photo of each card along with a description of the techniques I used so you can try them at home.

Technique Highlights:

To make these Watercolor Background cards I combined water-based inks with water to create soft blended backgrounds, then used heat embossing to bring floral stamps to life. These techniques are beginner-friendly and easily customizable depending on the colors and embossing powders you have on hand.

Gold Embossed version

To make this Watercolor Background apply Daffodil Delight, Balmy Blue and Old Olive with Blending Brushes. Spritz with water, dab off excess water. Let dry completely (use a heat tool if you need to) before embossing with VersarMark and Gold Emboss Powder from the Metallics WOW! Embossing Powder collection. Stamps used: Gallery Blooms and The Right Words

Copper Embossed Version

To make this Watercolor Background apply Melon Mambo, Daffodil Delight, Balmy Blue and Old Olive with Blending Brushes. Spritz with water, dab off excess water. Let dry completely (use a heat tool if you need to) before embossing with VersarMark and Copper Emboss Powder from the Metallics WOW! Embossing Powder collection. Stamps used: Gallery Blooms and The Right Words

White Embossed version

To make this Watercolor Background apply Melon Mambo, Daffodil Delight, Balmy Blue and Old Olive with Blending Brushes. Spritz with water, dab off excess water. Let dry completely (use a heat tool if you need to) before embossing with VersarMark and White Emboss Powder from the Basics WOW! Embossing Powder collection. Stamps used: Gallery Blooms and The Right Words

Silver Embossed version

To make this Watercolor Background lightly apply Daffodil Delight, Balmy Blue and Old Olive with Blending Brushes. Spritz with water, dab off excess water. Let dry completely (use a heat tool if you need to) before embossing with VersarMark and Silver Emboss Powder from the Metallics WOW! Embossing Powder collection. Stamps used: Gallery Blooms and The Right Words

Black Embossed Version

To make this Watercolor Background apply Melon Mambo, Daffodil Delight, Balmy Blue and Old Olive with Blending Brushes. Spritz with water, dab off excess water. Let dry completely (use a heat tool if you need to) before embossing with VersarMark and Black Emboss Powder from the Basics WOW! Embossing Powder collection. I also added some Black ink splatters to this card using a Basic Black Stampin’ Write Marker. Stamps used: Gallery Blooms and The Right Words
