Embossing Folder Tips & Tricks Every Cardmaker Should Know

Beginning Stamping· Card Making Ideas· Card Making Techniques

19 Jan

Embossing folders are one of the fastest ways to add texture to handmade cards — but today I’m going beyond basic embossing. In this Technique Spotlight class, I’m sharing four WOW embossing folder techniques that will help you get more variety, more dimension, and more value from the embossing folders you already own.

During the video, I demonstrate these four techniques step by step and also show finished card samples created with many more embossing folder ideas to inspire you.

Let’s take a closer look at the four techniques I’m teaching in the video.

I hope you are inspired to use your embossing folders after you watch the video!

1. Inked Embossing Folder Technique

(Raised vs. Recessed Look)

Inking an embossing folder before running it through your die-cutting machine gives you two completely different looks from one folder.

How to do it:

  • Apply ink directly to the embossing folder.
  • Ink the raised side of the folder for one look, or the flat side for another.
  • Place cardstock inside the folder and run it through your machine.

This technique is perfect for creating detailed backgrounds and adds instant interest with very little effort.

2. VersaMark + Embossing Powder with Embossing Folders

This technique adds shine, texture, and an elegant finish that always feels extra special.

How to do it:

  • Ink the embossing folder with VersaMark ink.
  • Place cardstock inside and run it through the machine.
  • Sprinkle embossing powder over the design.
  • Heat set to reveal a raised, metallic or glossy effect.

It’s a beautiful way to dress up card fronts and works especially well with metallic or white embossing powders.

3. Partial Embossing

You don’t have to emboss an entire piece of cardstock to make a statement. Partial embossing lets you control exactly where the texture appears.

How to do it:

  • Insert the cardstock into the embossing folder partway. Or you can use the trick I showed during the class in the video
  • Place your cutting plate only over the section you want embossed.
  • Run it through the machine carefully.

This technique creates intentional space for sentiments and focal images while still adding texture and depth.

4. Emboss First, Then Drag Ink Across

Why it matters: Highlights texture beautifully.

How to do it:

  • Emboss cardstock with an embossing folder.
  • Lightly drag an ink pad across the raised areas only.
✔ Stunning on white or light cardstock.
