Hey y’all!
What happens when you take ONE stamp set and change the background technique? You can create four completely different looks!
For this month’s Technique Spotlight, I’m celebrating my Million Dollar stamp set, Happy Place, with four handmade cards that show just how much a background can transform a design.
We’re playing with decorative masks, ink blending, watercolor, and heat embossing. And wait until you see the last card! It combines several techniques to create a gorgeous, glossy background.
The best part? You can use these ideas with other stamp sets and supplies you already have in your craft room.

Grab your favorite inks, stamps, and cardstock, and let’s make some cards!
Card #1: Decorative Mask Ink Blending

For my first card, I used the Water & Dotted Lines Decorative Masks (#167760) with Azure Afternoon ink.
I blended ink through the decorative mask onto Basic White cardstock to create a beautiful blue-and-white water pattern.
But I didn’t stop there! I also used the same mask and ink on Azure Afternoon cardstock to create a subtle tone-on-tone effect.
Same mask. Same ink. Two completely different results!
This is such a fun way to stretch your supplies. Try your favorite decorative mask on both white and colored cardstock and see what happens.
Card #2: Tone-on-Tone Masking with Colored Cardstock

For my second card, I used Azure Afternoon cardstock again, but this time I changed the ink to Misty Moonlight.
That darker blue ink creates a rich water pattern when applied through the decorative mask.
I added the HAPPY image from my Happy Place stamp set and finished the card with Adhesive-Backed Sparkle Sequins.
Here’s something I want you to remember: You don’t always have to start with white cardstock when using a decorative mask!
Try adding a darker coordinating ink to colored cardstock. It’s an easy way to create depth and interest without adding more layers.
Card #3: Emboss Resist Watercolor Background

Now we’re getting a little messy—and you know I love that!
For this card, I stamped the HAPPY image onto Watercolor Paper using White Craft Ink. Then I added WOW Basics White Embossing Powder and heat set it.
Next, I spritzed the paper with water using a Stampin’ Spritzer and added Azure Afternoon and Blueberry Bushel ink refills with a Water Painter.
The white heat-embossed image resists the watercolor, allowing the beach scene inside the HAPPY letters to stand out against that beautiful blue background.
And here’s my favorite watercolor advice:
Let the water do the work!
Every background will turn out a little differently. That’s part of the fun, and there’s no need to make yours look exactly like mine.
Card #4: Double Emboss Resist — The Technique Spotlight!

This is the card that inspired me to bring all these background ideas together!
I started with Basic White Thick cardstock and used Blending Brushes to apply three ink colors:
- Balmy Blue across the top
- Misty Moonlight through the center
- Hydrangea Hue along the bottom
After blending the colors, I stamped HAPPY and BIRTHDAY with White Craft Ink and heat embossed the images with WOW Basics White Embossing Powder.
Then came the fun part!
I placed the Water Decorative Mask over the background and tapped my VersaMark ink pad directly over the mask.
After removing the mask, I added WOW Clear Embossing Powder and heat set it.
The clear embossing creates a gorgeous, glossy water pattern over the blended background!
Be sure to watch this part of the video. It’s one of those techniques where the magic really happens when the embossing powder melts.
One Stamp Set, Four Completely Different Looks
I love how these four cards demonstrate that you don’t need a different stamp set for every project.
Sometimes all you need is a different background technique!
And although I used Happy Place for this class, I hope you’ll try these ideas with other stamps in your collection.
Use what you have, experiment with different colors, and don’t be afraid to go rogue!
