Heat Embossing Tips & Tricks for Cardmaking

Beginning Stamping· Card Making Ideas· Card Making Techniques

20 Apr

If you’ve ever wanted to add that beautiful raised, glossy shine to your cards… heat embossing is the technique you need to know!

In today’s Technique Spotlight, I’m sharing my favorite heat embossing tips and tricks using VersaMark ink, WOW Embossing Powders, and the Stampin’ Up! Heat Tool.

And let me just say… this card turned out stunning

I am still so proud of the design of my Million Dollar Stamp Set. I was able to show it off with so many ideas in August 2025. I have always called this a Technique Stamp Set, and in the blog post I shared lots of Technique ideas for you. You can see those ideas on my blog HERE. In September 2025, I shared even more ideas HERE

The Scenic Coast Specialty Designer Series Paper was designed for my stamp set! It will be available starting May 5, 2026. It is part of the SCENIC COAST SUITE COLLECTION that you will want to get!

A Beachy Card Using the Happy Place Stamp Set

For this project, I used my Happy Place Stamp Set along with the brand new Scenic Coast Designer Series Paper (coming soon!).

The soft coastal background paired with that bold, shiny embossed sentiment is just the perfect combination. Heat embossing really makes your focal point POP—especially over patterned paper like this.

What is Heat Embossing?

Heat embossing is a simple technique where you:

  • Stamp with a sticky ink (like VersaMark)
  • Sprinkle embossing powder over the image
  • Heat it until it melts into a smooth, raised finish

It looks fancy… but I promise—it’s easier than you think. No stress!

My Go-To Heat Embossing Tips

Here are a few of my favorite tips to help you get great results every time:

Use an Anti-Static Tool (Embossing Buddy)

This keeps embossing powder from sticking where you don’t want it (game changer!).

Preheat Your Heat Tool

Let it warm up for a few seconds before you start heating—this helps reduce warping.

Heat from Underneath First

Start heating from the back of your cardstock to keep powder from blowing away.

Watch for the Shine

As soon as the powder turns glossy… STOP. That’s your cue! You can over-emboss!

Clean Up Before Heating

Use a small paintbrush to remove stray powder specks before you heat.
