Learn How to Use Water Brush Pen | Stampin’ Up! Aqua Painter!

The Aqua painter is one of the tools I use all of the time when crafting and making handmade cards!  Today I am chatting with you about how to use these watercolor brush pens!  Each package comes with two and can be filled with water among other things!  But today we are only focusing on water.

While chatting with a Stamping Friend she didn’t know about the Stampin’ Up! aqua painter so I wanted to help her and any others that needed some tips using them! I hope you enjoy today’s watercolor card tutorial!

Background Wash

The first way to use your water brush pen (a.k.a. Aqua Painter) is to use Ink Refills, place a small amount either on a clear stamping block or in the lid of coordinating stamp pad case.

Water Color paper or Shimmery White cardstock are best for doing a wash.  As other papers the fibers will break down too much.

Squeeze the bulb of the Aqua-painter into the ink to water it down a little.  Then apply the color onto your cardstock.  You can do a small area or do the entire layer of cardstock.

Use one color or several colors to create different backgrounds!

When using this watercolor background technique, I encourage you to let the project air dry and not to use your heat tool.  Below is what happens if you do!  See how the heat tool “blew” my color below? 

Water Brush Pen with Markers

Color any outline image stamp with several Stampin’ Write Markers as they are water based markers. Then, use the Aqua painter to blend water down the colors and blend them together; this is a very artistic way of coloring.  You can see on my video how I wanted a softer look so I blotted the markers with a tissue!

Aqua Painter with Watercolor Pencils

Watch how fast I use the Watercolor Pencils and my Aqua painter to complete a watercolored look on my card.  This technique is easy to do and I love how it removes any pencil streak marks!

Other things you can put in the water brush pen / Aqua painter:

Rubbing Alcohol is another liquid you can put in them.  It drys very fast and doesn’t leave “water marks”.

Stampin’ Up! sells Shimmer Paints right now and you can add some of that to the rubbing alcohol to give a painted shimmery look to any technique!
