How to Use Craft Stencils for Card Making: Easy Background Techniques

Card Making Ideas· Card Making Techniques· Gallery

16 Jan

Looking for craft stencils for card making that won’t leave you covered in ink and questioning yourself? You’re in the right place! I’m about to share some seriously game-changing techniques that’ll have you creating backgrounds so pretty that your crafting friends will think you hired a professional. When I spotted these Linked Together Decorative Masks in the January – April 2025 Mini Catalog, I practically did a happy dance in my craft room – finally, a way to make gorgeous cards without needing an art degree or three extra hands! These craft stencils are perfect for beginner stampers too!

Getting Started with Craft Stencils for Card Making

The beauty of craft stencils lies in their versatility. Whether you’re new to card making or have been crafting for years, stencils (or Masks, as Stampin’ Up! calls them) are your secret weapon for creating stunning backgrounds. The Linked Together Bundle comes with everything you need:

  • Linked Together Stamp Set for perfect coordination
  • Linked Together Dies for dimensional elements
  • Linked Together Decorative Masks for beautiful backgrounds

Essential Tips for Using Craft Stencils

Through countless hours of experimenting with these craft stencils, I’ve discovered some game-changing techniques:

  1. Secure your base: Place Mini Glue Dots between your cardstock and chipboard to prevent shifting
  2. Perfect positioning: Use Washi Tape to hold your craft stencils firmly in place
  3. Easy alignment: Mark the notch positions on your stencils with an ink pen for perfect placement every time

Color Techniques for Stenciled Card Backgrounds

Let’s talk about the magic of layering colors with craft stencils! I’ve been experimenting with various green combinations, and the results are breathtaking. Here’s what I’m planning to try next:

  • Ocean-inspired blues for serene backgrounds
  • Dynamic reds for bold, festive cards
  • Soft pink palettes for romantic occasions

Mixing and matching the different layers is so much fun!

Here are the cards I created with the backgrounds

I used the Color Coach Wheel to choose my colors. I went with the Monochromatic choices of the Yellow Greens.

I was inspired to create this card based on the design on page 48 of the January – April 2025 Mini Catalog. It’s funny, though—mine doesn’t resemble that one at all! LOL! For the background layer, I used the Linked Together Dies to achieve this cutout effect.

Important Tips I’ve Learned

Here’s a crucial tip to save you from a crafting mishap: While the Linked Together Dies align perfectly with the stenciled patterns, avoid cutting directly through your colored backgrounds. Trust me – I learned this lesson the hard way!

Pro Technique: Adding Dimension

Want to make your stenciled designs pop? Here’s my favorite trick: Use a pencil eraser to gently lift your flower petals. This simple technique adds beautiful dimension to your stenciled designs.
