I was so excited to play with my chalk pastels in card making and I came up with 5 ways to use the chalks and 4 ideas for cards to share.
I recently went to the beach and I thought chalk pastels on cards with a ‘beachy theme’ was a great way to ‘close’ summer.
You’ll be amazed how these chalk pastels work with a variety of coloring tools–from sponge daubers, to blending brushes and blending pens, Q-tips, and water painters too–there is a method everyone can choose and use!
You may think that chalk pastels are to be picked up and colored with like you would a crayon. You can do that but I found it easier to scrape some chalk off onto a paper plate or silicone mat. That’s where the fun BEGAN with the chalks…watch the video to see all the goodies!

Chalk pastels in card making
I started my chalk pastels in card making with the blending brushes directly on the embossed (Seashells 3D embossing folder) cardstock. Using the soft pastels this way gave my card a soft look.

Have you ever used chalk pastels in card making? Will you try it now? Let me know ’cause I’m curious!
For my 2nd card I used the same Seashells Embossing folder but this time I added Versamark to the top part of the folder before I ran it thru my Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine. Then, using the Blending Brushes I applied the chalk pastels. As you can see the colors are bolder.

The 3rd card features the chalk pastels applied to the Koi Fish with the sponge daubers. You’ll want to watch the video to see how I masked off the fish so that the chalk did not get on the parts of the panel I wanted to remain white.
If some of the chalk gets on an area that you don’t want it simply apply a white eraser to it and it will come off easily! Using Q-Tips allow you to get into tight areas when the Daubers are too big.

I wanted to demonstrate the Q-Tips and Blender Pens for applying the chalk pastels so this card is simple but elegant! After I used the Q-Tips to color my shells I went back and added touches of darker colors using the Blender Pens or Water Painters. Be careful not to use too much water though!

My friend Tina Zinck in Canada inspired me using the Soft Chalk Pastels. It brought back memories of past experiences we had using chalk. I did not add anything over these chalk pastels as very little rubs off but if you want to seal your cards you can use an inexpensive hair spray!
