Today we’re talking card bases and layers | Beginning Stamping!
You want to make cards but don’t know how to start? I remember when I first started. I was overwhelmed and confused! So many people ask me about card bases and layers and sizing so I wanted to address it today!
Want to remember these measurements? Pin the image above!
Card base is the first step, you will want a thicker cardstock to hold all of the layers you will be adding. On my video I show the Whisper White Thick and a colored cardstock like Real Red. They will support the weight you will be adding!
Two Ways to Cut Cardstock
Cardstock measures 8 1/2″ x 11″
cut in half at 5 1/2″, score at 4 1/4″
or cut it at 4 1/4″ on 8 1/2″ side to have a card base that measures 4 1/2″ x 11″, score at 5 1/2″
What about layers?
Layers give your card more weight and truly make a handmade card! Since I am talking to beginner card makers this is the standard layer measurements that I use.
A single layer is 1/4″ smaller than your card base. In this case my card base measures 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ so I cut my layer at 4″ x 5 1/4″
It’s Always fun to add more layers and again using my 1/4″ rule:
- Whisper White Thick card base is 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″
- Real Red Layer is 4″ x 5 1/4″
- Whisper White Layer is 3 3/4″ x 5″
Using these measurements is my most common layering however, the possibilities are endless! As I mentioned on my video go to Pinterest and create a board called Card Making Layouts. Pin layouts to your board! So many others have already done the work for you! I have started such a board myself, if you want to see it CLICK HERE
